- 1 cup lentils (any variety), rinsed
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
- Roti or whole wheat flatbread for serving

Preparation
- In a pressure cooker or pot, combine lentils, chopped onion, chopped tomatoes, minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped green chili, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and salt.
- Add enough water to cover the ingredients and bring to a boil.
- If using a pressure cooker, cook for 10-12 minutes until lentils are tender. If using a pot, cook for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lentils are cooked and the mixture thickens.
- Stir in garam masala and simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
- Serve lentil dal hot with roti for a nutritious and comforting dinner.
