Lentil Dal with Roti

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentils (any variety), rinsed
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
  • Roti or whole wheat flatbread for serving

Preparation

  1. In a pressure cooker or pot, combine lentils, chopped onion, chopped tomatoes, minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped green chili, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and salt.
  2. Add enough water to cover the ingredients and bring to a boil.
  3. If using a pressure cooker, cook for 10-12 minutes until lentils are tender. If using a pot, cook for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lentils are cooked and the mixture thickens.
  4. Stir in garam masala and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  5. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
  6. Serve lentil dal hot with roti for a nutritious and comforting dinner.
